Emmy Nominations - Friday Night Lights

Clear Eyes, Full Hearts... Can't Lose!

Friday Night Lights fans around the globe walked into work this morning with a bit more pep in their step. As soon as I finish this post, I'll strut into work much like LeBron James will strut onto the set of LeBron Decision tonight on ESPN. See, as fans of FNL, we celebrate the little things. We do this because Jason Katims and Peter Berg so sensationally crafted a show, which executes the subtle things unlike anything I have seen on TV since The Wire.

What are we celebrating?

The Emmy Nominations came out early this morning. The Emmy's rarely get anything right. Unlike any other awards show, the Emmy's consistently botch their nominations. Often leaving out television's finest work to make room for shows with large audiences, which produce a level of quality that equals, well, shit. I will be the first to admit, I enjoy some of the shows that have bizarrely caught fire with the Emmys. Boston Legal was a stone cold lock each year to snag a chunk of nominations even when the show's quality turned to, you guessed it, shit. Instead of recognizing the brilliance of HBO's one of a kind drama, The Wire, we endured an annual heart breaking trip to the computer to skim through the year's nominations to find no mention of David Simon's masterpiece.

Recently, the same has been true for Friday Night Lights. Even worse, we've been tortured by NBC's attempts to cancel the show due to tiny ratings. The biggest TV victory in history might be the salvation of Friday Night Lights after seasons 1 and 2. Critics, die hard fans, and an innovative partnership with DirecTV came together and managed to resuscitate a show that had already seen the light. Hell, it was six feet in the ground and we finished the eulogy before the post-mortem miracle took place.

Imagine if we had not been given the pleasure to watch season 3 and 4 of Friday Night Lights? That would have been an absolute travesty.

What more could we ask for? Well, we have been screaming at the Emmys for years to show Friday Night Lights some love. Television's most dynamic duo has been killing it on the sets of Austin Texas for 4 seasons now and finally, the Emmys woke up and caught them in action. Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler are extraordinary actors. On FNL, they play Tami and Eric Taylor. Their portrayal of married life in a small Texas town is unlike anything I have seen on TV or in film.

This morning, The Taylor's were nominated for Best Actor and Actress in a TV Drama. This is a win for every working member of that show - actors, producers, directors, PAs, set workers, you name it. And you better believe this is a win for the fans! While I wish the show itself had been nominated for Best Drama instead of True Blood, I'll take what I can get.

The little things, remember?
