Brazil vs. Netherlands

Last night, a buddy and I debated waking up at 6am to visit the Haight to watch Brazil take on the Netherlands at a 'Brazil' bar - Martin Macks. Ultimately, we decided to enjoy the game (separately) in the comfort of our own living rooms with a fresh pot of coffee and a couch to veg out on.

After rolling out of bed at quarter to seven, I texed my buddy and we both agreed that we blew it. As I write this during the beginning of the 2nd half of a 1-0 Brazil lead, I am imagining a festively raucous crowd at Martin Macks. Fans singing, dancing, drinking, and cheering on their team.We both pledged to be there for the next match, should Brazil advance of course.

With the World Cup gracing us with its presence only every four years, one must take advantage of the spirit and passion it provides. A Brazil bar in the heart of Haight Ashbury in San Francisco? Yep.Why wouldn't there be?

Now at the 55 minute mark, the Netherlands have tied it up!! I am sure there are hundreds of bars across the US alone in a frenzy of excitement as they celebrate, 'their' team's comeback against mighty Brazil. Can I be in both places at once?

The stage is set for a dramatic finish as two great teams compete in South Africa for a trip to the World Cup semi-finals. I recommend we all get out of the house for the next game. Find a bar with passionate fans and take in the energy and heart of the environment. The more US sports fans to experience this level of drama and enthusiasm from athletes and fans alike, the better our team will be four, eight, twelve years from now.

For now, the US team is home, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy the spectacle of the World Cup. And we don't have to travel far to do so. I promise you that.

And who wouldn't want to witness and participate in a moment like this:

Just like that, the Netherlands score again. Up 2-1, they have a chance to knock off the tournament's top dog. Yelp a Holland bar in your city and sprint there!
